Building Custom WordPress Themes

In our experience most profitable and growing WordPress sites use custom themes. Despite the massive industry around 3rd party themes, this simply is not how most profitable WordPress businesses operate. 3rd party themes can never be as efficient or fitted to the brand as custom themes. There is an interim option many sites use which is to create a child theme the layers new styling and templates on top of a 3rd party base theme. While this approach provides some advantages, allowing for theme customization beyond what the 3rd party base theme can provide, it’s also questionable if this interim step makes sense. If the end result (presuming your WP site is successful) is that you will eventually build a fully custom WordPress theme, then why bother with the investment into a child theme you’ll eventually discard?
